Martens were engaged to prepare a hydrologic and hydraulic assessment of the Cox’s Creek floodplain at Mullaley in the north west slopes of New South Wales. Environmental, hydraulic and hydrologic data were used to construct a 1D/2D dynamic flood model which extended over a 11.5 km long river reach and covered a 4 km wide floodplain.
Cox’s Creek is a tributary of the Naomi River which flows into the Darling River. Flow rates in the 20 year flood event at the study area are significant and led to widespread flooding, erosion and damage to farmland. The study considered flood characteristics before and after introduction of agricultural irrigation structures on the floodplain, and considered rehabilitative options to reduce flood impacts of these structures.
