Martens were engaged to prepare a preliminary flood constraints and development appraisal for Burraga Island, at the Shoalhaven River, Nowra.

Martens were engaged to prepare a preliminary flood constraints and development appraisal for Burraga Island, at the Shoalhaven River, Nowra, to assist with the determination of suitable tourist development scenario options at the site.

Burraga Island is a lowland riverine feature, formed primarily through alluvial deposition. It sits on the lower Shoalhaven River which is classified as an in-filled basin/floodplain complex. The lower estuary is further classified as a ‘barrier estuary’ at a mature stage of evolution, where the original water body has almost completely in-filled with sediment, and fluvial sand is often discharged to the ocean during flood events.

Project scope included:

  • Review existing flood data and literature for the Shoalhaven River.
  • Develop existing conditions hydraulic model for the Island and lower Shoalhaven River floodplain.
  • Model various preliminary ‘development’ cut/fill scenarios to enable assessment of potential site development footprint.
  • Model the preliminary cut/fill scenarios to potential assess offsite impacts.
