Martens were engaged to prepare a hydrologic and hydraulic assessment of an urbanised area in Hillsdale, in Sydney’s south-east. Environmental, hydraulic and hydrologic data were used to construct a 2D dynamic flood model, with an embedded 1D pit and pipe network. The highly urbanised nature of the catchment prevented all overland flows to the site, but surcharging from the local stormwater network led to flooding at the site.

At the time the site was being used for residential and commercial purposes. The flood assessment was conducted to determine the existing 1 in 100 year and probable maximum flood constraints on the site and consider potential rehabilitative options, should the site be rezoned and redeveloped.

Project scope included:

  • Development of a 3D terrain for the study area
  • Catchment hydrological modelling of 1 in 100 year and probable maximum flood design flows
  • Creation of 2D hydraulic model of flood flows with imbedded 1D pit and pipe elements
  • Assessment of site flood mitigation options to increase flood free land availability
