Martens and Associates were engaged to supervise and document the removal of underground storage tanks (USTs) and the remediation of a former service station site at Mosman, NSW. Remedial works were required to support a future residential development on the site, which included a 3 storey basement carpark.

Remediation involved locating UST via ground penetrating radar (GPR); removal of remaining liquid waste inside UST; removal of USTs and fuel lines; excavation and off-site removal to licensed landfill of residual hydrocarbon impacted soils and weathered rock.

Project scope included:

  • Locate UST via GPR, guide removal of liquid waste and empty tanks
  • Supervise soil and weathered rock remedial works, which were guided by photo-ionisation detector (PID) and visual cues
  • Waste classify hydrocarbon impacted soil and rock material
  • Collect validation samples to confirm removal of contamination
  • Assess validation results in light of current NEPM guidelines
  • Preparation of validation report for NSW EPA auditor review and approval
