Martens was engaged to conduct a geotechnical hazard risk assessment and ongoing risk management for the continued development of a hard rock quarry at Sancrox, NSW.

Martens was engaged to conduct a geotechnical hazard risk assessment and ongoing risk management for the continued development of a hard rock quarry at Sancrox in NSW as part of ongoing quarry safety protocols.

The quarry is located approximately 8.5km west of Port Macquarie and 305km north of Sydney. Targeted quarry materials include high quality low grade metamorphic volcaniclastic rock and low grade metamorphic mudstone, sandstone and shale. Folding of the lithological sequence and faults have tilted the original bedding within the rock by up to approximately 70°.

Project scope included:

  • On-site mapping of geological features, including discontinuities (joints, bedding planes, faults etc.) and rock weathering
  • Stereonet analysis to assess dominant joint domains
  • Identification of geotechnical hazards (such as rock topple, rock slide, wedge or rock fall)
  • Qualitative risk assessment for each bench and haul road and the overall quarry
  • Provision of recommendations for risk management, including monitoring and maintenance programs
