Martens was engaged to provide planning advice, which included carrying out geotechnical hazard risk assessments, for a 5 lot residential subdivision of 85 Hillside Road, Newport, NSW. The site was known to be impacted by soil creep and localised near-surface slumping and contains numerous large sandstone boulders.

The project scope comprised subdivision design, including:

  • New access roads, requiring retention up to 3m deep cuts and fill
  • Assessment of suitable locations for future building platforms
  • Identification of, and provision of advice associated with, potential geotechnical hazards (such as rock fall, active and dormant landslides) likely to impact proposed and existing developments and roads

The assessment scope included:

  • Site walkover and geomorphological study
  • Field investigation, including test pits, boreholes and dynamic cone penetration testing
  • Quantitative slope instability risk assessment in accordance with AGS 2007
  • Retaining wall design for up to 3m deep cuts into steep colluvial slopes, with slide risk, and for fill platforms
  • Provision of advice and recommendations to support development application and for earthworks, pavement construction, stormwater management and monitoring and maintenance actions
