Martens were engaged to provide engineering design services for a public equestrian facility located at Bayfield Road, Galston, NSW.

Martens were engaged to provide engineering design services for a public equestrian facility located at Bayfield Road, Galston, NSW. The project used hydrological and hydraulic data and modelling and site survey to design minimum requirements for the proposed stormwater treatment system.

Galston is a rural area with predominantly rural-residential properties, some commercial areas near the village and extensive parks and bushland. The subject site drains to the Berowra Creek valley that may be significantly impacted by changes to water quality and system flows from upstream development.

Project scope for both Development Application and Construction Certificate stages of the development included:

  • Design of stormwater pits, pipes and headwalls, stormwater treatment wetlands and connection to existing Council road drainage in Bayfield Road.
  • Specification of minimum water quality measures in constructed wetlands to treat captured stormwater.
  • Flood impact assessment.
  • Site earthworks design.
  • Site pavement and parking area design.
  • Provision of construction sediment and erosion control plans.
  • Certifications of site works.

Specific scope for Water Sensitive Urban Design included:

  • Hydraulic and hydrological design – including structural design – of all system pits, pipes and headwalls, constructed wetlands and swales for water quality treatment, sediment and erosion protection works for stormwater discharge points and specification of potential system pump, rising mains, manual and automated valves and control infrastructure for irrigation of treated stormwater onto equestrian fields.
  • Design of sub-surface drainage for equestrian field to re-direct flows to site wetlands.
  • Design of overflow parking areas to minimise potential for surface erosion and transfer of sediments to site water quality wetlands.

Integration of site stormwater management system with site landscaping and vegetation requirements.
