Martens were engaged to conduct a geotechnical hazard risk assessment for an operating hard rock quarry at Kulnura, NSW.

Martens were engaged to conduct a geotechnical hazard risk assessment for an operating hard rock quarry at Kulnura, NSW. The assessment was required as part of the quarry’s ongoing safety protocols and to support the continued development of the resource.

Kulnura is located 22km to the north west of Gosford in the Peats Ridge area of NSW. The quarry site is comprised of Triassic age sandstone and a Tertiary basaltic diatreme consisting of volcanic ash, breccia and columnar basalt.

Project scope included:

  • Walkover inspection of the quarry batters, benches and haul roads
  • Documentation of geotechnical conditions such as rock mass, defects (jointing, faulting etc) and weathering
  • Identification of geotechnical hazards (such as rock topple, rock slide, wedge or rock fall)
  • Stereonet analysis to determine dominant joint domains
  • Qualitative risk assessment undertaken for each bench, haul road and the overall quarry
  • Provision of recommendations for rectification, monitoring and maintenance actions
