Martens were engaged to undertake a foundation assessment for an existing Optus monopole installation at Villawood, NSW.

Martens were engaged to undertake a foundation assessment for an existing Optus monopole installation at Villawood, NSW. The assessment was required to support the structural assessment of increased wind loading on the existing structure, due to the proposed installation of additional telecommunications antennas.

Many older mobile telecommunications installations in Australia are missing works as executed (WAE) plans or detailed structural drawings. As a result, structural assessment of any proposed augmentation to the towers is difficult. Martens and Associates has provided expert services for many existing telecommunication foundation installations.

Project scope included:

  • Mobilisation of drill rig and investigation team to site
  • Test pits excavated adjacent to footing to determine type of footing and width
  • Drilling to 10m below ground level, with solid flight auger adjacent to existing foundation (where deeper foundation such as pile/pier is expected)
  • Assessment of depth of steel reinforcement in pile/pier via ‘down the hole’ magnometer techniques
  • Analysis of field data and preparation of report with inferred foundation conditions for structural design team
