Martens were engaged to conduct a geotechnical investigation for a new 5 storey residential apartment building with 3 levels of underground basement carparking.

Martens were engaged to conduct a geotechnical investigation for a new 5 storey residential apartment building with 3 levels of underground basement carparking. The investigation was required to support a development application (DA) to North Sydney Council.

Undertaking geotechnical investigations on existing residential sites in the Neutral Bay area (and similar suburbs) is difficult due to access limitations for drill rigs.

Project scope included:

• Walkover inspection of the site to assess topography, geology, hydrology and vegetation
• Excavation of 2 boreholes with tight access drill rig down to 17.5m below grade to collect soil data and undertake rock coring via NMLC
• Construction of 2 monitoring wells
• Installation of groundwater data loggers for 3 months continuous monitoring of groundwater levels
• Laboratory testing of rock core (axial and diametral strengths)
• Preparation of geotechnical report documenting geotechnical and hydrogeological conditions; provision of geotechnical parameters for design; and recommendations for construction and future testing and monitoring requirements
